Dr Jon Copley is a marine biologist and Associate Professor in Ocean Exploration & Public Engagement at the University of Southampton.
His research explores life in the deep ocean, where he has led expeditions discovering new species of animals – there’s even a species of sea spider kindly named after him by a colleague.
As a ‘bathynaut’, Jon went on the first minisub dive to the world’s deepest undersea hot springs, 5 kilometres (3.1 miles) down in the Cayman Trench of the Caribbean Sea, and he took part in the first minisub dives to reach 1 kilometre deep in the Antarctic. He was also a science advisor for the BBC’s Blue Planet II, and he is the author of the book ‘Ask An Ocean Explorer’.
His expertise and experience in his field is remarkable and we are honoured to have him join us as Guest Curator for Monsters of the Deep.
