Red Sails & Pilchards – Lecture

Illustration of Mevagissey harbour. There are houses dotted on the hillside, people walking along the harbour front, some ships moored in the harbour, and some out at sea.

Red Sails & Pilchards with Matt Johnson, Thursday 25 May, 7.30pm

Falmouth-based illustrator, Matt Johnson, will be introducing his illustrated book, Red Sails & Pilchards: An introduction to Cornwall’s Fishing History. In his talk, Matt will reveal his creative process, from initial sketch to final print. He will also describe National Maritime Museum Cornwall’s role in the research process, including specific support by Tony Pawlyn and the Museum’s Bartlett Maritime Research Centre & Library. The talk will feature original artwork and videos documenting Matt’s process, as well as some of the treasures from the Museum’s own collection relating to Cornwall’s fishing heritage in the 19th century.

Matt Johnson is an illustrator based in Falmouth, Cornwall. His work celebrates nature and the natural world, with Cornish wildlife and landscapes featuring heavily in his work. Matt’s style is most strongly associated with the fashion brand Seasalt for whom he has been designing since 2004. He also works freelance, creating illustrations for clients such as Bloomsbury Publishing, Design For Today and the RNLI.
