Silhouettes & Shadows – October Half Term 2023

03.02.23  –  By: Lindsey Skinner  –  In: Kids + family, Learning

On the left side of the image, 'Silhouettes & Shadows' and 'October half term' is written in white text against a black background. On the right-hand side, a pirate ship is silhouetted against a canvas sail, featuring a pirate, a ghost and a few bats.

The nights are drawing in and the shadows are taking over. Come and join us for a spooky half term this October! Join in with the eerie shadow pirate puppet stories and songs in the Main Hall, create your own shadow puppets in Make & Take, and join the Museum trail to find out what our pirate ghost uncovers lurking on his ghoulish ship!

*Please note, our half term activities have concluded for 2023. Watch this space for what we’ll have in store for 2024!

Silhouettes & Shadows

Monday 23 – Friday 27 October

11am, 1pm and 3pm

You’ve heard stories of Captains Pugwash, Hook and Sparrow but what of the real terrors of the high seas from the golden age of piracy? Blackbeard, Anne Bonney, Calico Jack and Black Caesar, to name but a few. Starbox theatre of Shadows and Wilderness Music join Mr Maggots, Blackbeard’s cook, to bring you a feast of shadowy swashbuckling half-truths behind the legends. What really happened? Only Mr Maggots knows – ‘cos he was there!

Make & Take

Saturday 21 – Sunday 29 October

12.30pm – 3.30pm

Make a spooky shadow puppet and create your own shadow puppet stories together. Plus, we’re creating ghost decorations too.

Pirate Ghost Ship Trail

Saturday 21 – Sunday 29 October

Help our pirate ghost pack his ghost ship for a ghoulish voyage! Have fun exploring the Museum in search of our spooky light boxes – which will reveal what’s lurking on his ship! Will you be brave enough to look into the pirate skull’s eyes?

What else is here

Explore 15 galleries over four floors, jump aboard boats, climb the 100-foot Lookout Tower, watch boat-building, go underwater in the Tidal Zone, discover stories of ocean adventures and survival, and sail miniature boats on the boat pool. What’s more, our scenic Waterfront Cafe will be serving spooky cakes.

It’s free!

The Silhouettes & Shadows October half term activities are FREE as part of the Museum’s annual admission fee. Pay once and get in free for a year.
