Celebrating the RNLI’s Bicentenary at NMMC

A historic photo of Falmouth Lifeboat.

Forming in 1824, the RNLI is deeply rooted in coastal communities across the country, safeguarding people on our oceans and shorelines. We’re celebrating the charity’s bicentennial year with a series of events at NMMC. Here’s a look at what’s on over the coming months.

Kurt Jackson: RNLI Cornwall

Kurt Jackson's painting, 'Punching Through'. It depicts an RNLI lifeboat crashing through a wave.

This exhibition from internationally renowned contemporary artist Kurt Jackson documents the important role the RNLI has in Cornwall and its place within communities.

Jackson’s RNLI Cornwall paintings vary in scale from postcard sized pieces up to massive canvasses measured in metres that capture the charity’s iconic blue and orange lifeboats nestled into Cornish harbours and breaking through mountainous waves. Closer to shore are paintings featuring lifeguards at the centre of Cornish beach life at locations including Sennen, Gwithian, Porthtowan and Trebarwith.

RNLI Cornwall also features a selection of paintings created inside Mousehole’s old Penlee Lifeboat Station where Jackson was given special access to capture it as it was left following the tragic disaster that resulted in the loss of 16 souls. A poignant tribute to the sacrifice made by the RNLI’s brave volunteer crews.

The exhibition will run from Friday 15 March to Sunday 3 November. Find out more here.

RNLI Rescue Zone

We’re refreshing our much-loved RNLI Rescue Zone to showcase the charity’s incredible 200-year story from its foundation to the present day. There’s also the ride-on rescue vehicles and a dressing up area for young visitors to live out their own adventures.

Cornwall Galleries

We’ll be updating our Cornwall Galleries later in the year to incorporate stories throughout the RNLI’s history in Cornwall. Watch this space.

The Lifeboat Ceilidh

On Saturday 23 March, the Museum will be hosting The Lifeboat Ceilidh, featuring The Tinners Ceilidh Band, Bryher’s Boys, and compered by the one and only Betty Stogs. Starting at 7pm, there’ll be an evening of fun packed with dancing, an auction and a raffle, with all money raised being donated to the RNLI. Book tickets here.
