Mary Broad/Bryant – The Creation of a Cornish Legend – Lecture

A painting of people aboard a wooden boat.

Thursday 10 October, 7.30pm.

The Cornish woman Mary Broad / Bryant has been the subject of biographies, drama, fiction, and film. Renowned for joining an extraordinary 69 day voyage in an open boat, from Port Jackson in New South Wales to Dutch Timor.

In this fascinating talk, Dr Charlotte MacKenzie, former senior lecturer at Bath Spa University, offers answers to the following questions: Who was Mary Broad and what really happened? When and why was Mary Broad’s remarkable story embellished and fictionalised? Why was it only in recent decades that she became a Cornish legend?
