Museum Director

Circa £75,000

Permanent, Full-time

National Maritime Museum Cornwall is an independent award-winning museum and visitor attraction with an acclaimed exhibitions and events programme as well as a strong education service. Located in an iconic building on the Falmouth waterfront, it is a significant component of Cornwall’s strategic cultural offer, a major national centre for maritime history and holds the National Small Boat Collection.

The Museum has prospered for nearly twenty-five years and, following the present Director’s decision to retire, is looking for an inspirational, commercial and energetic Director to lead the next phase of development of the Museum, including ensuring that it fulfils its cultural and educational objectives and has a long-term sustainable business model.

Candidates must be able to demonstrate that they have the necessary vision, leadership skills and determination to succeed in a continuously changing heritage environment and challenging commercial circumstances. The Director, supported by the Trustees, will be responsible for developing and successfully implementing the Museum’s new strategy as well as being the ‘voice’ of the Museum, locally and nationally.

The successful candidate will have a proven track record of operating at a strategic level in a heritage environment, spanning the full range of cultural, curatorial and commercial aspects of the Museum and will be empathetic with the maritime world.

They will also have high personal and corporate ambition, personal integrity and an ability to work with the full range of stakeholders and the Museum’s multi-disciplinary team. Approximately two thirds of the Museum’s income comes from visitors, so significant experience of managing visitor attractions and a strong commercial background are requirements for the successful candidate.

A relocation package would be available for the ideal candidate.

Director Recruitment Pack

Visitor Experience Supervisor

£13.71 per hour

Part-time, 2 days per week (15 hours), Sunday and Monday

Fixed-term – one year contract

We are seeking a Visitor Experience Supervisor, who will work as part of the Visitor Experience team, overseeing the day-to-day operation of the Museum to ensure we deliver an exceptional visitor experience.

You will undertake the daily procedures at the start of the day to ensure the Museum is ready for our first visitors at 10.00am and have responsibility for securely locking up at the end of the day.

You will be the key point of contact for all staff and volunteers on operational matters, problem solving to ensure issues are resolved quickly and efficiently.

Our Visitor Experience Supervisors offer a warm welcome to visitors arriving for their visit, process admission tickets, and assist with retail sales. They have daily management for our Visitor Experience volunteers, ensuring the rota is maintained, proactively contacting volunteers where there is a requirement for support.

You will have previous experience of working in a busy customer-facing environment, have a ‘can-do’ attitude, with excellent customer service skills. You will be an excellent team player who can face the daily challenges competently and calmly.

You would be the ‘responsible person’ in an evacuation situation, consulting with the emergency services and senior members of staff. You will have responsibility to administer first aid to visitors, staff, and volunteers, as and when required. It is not essential that you have a first aid qualification, as training will be provided.
