At the end of May, film enthusiasts and lovers of Cornwall’s coastline will be treated to the cinematic release of ‘The Salt Path’ film, based on Raynor Winn’s much-loved memoir. This poignant story is set against the backdrop of the South West Coast Path, with some scenes filmed right here in Cornwall.
The South West Coast Path weaves through some of Cornwall’s most spectacular landscapes, many of which feature in the book and film, from the rugged cliffs of Tintagel to the sheltered coves of the Lizard Peninsula.
History of the Path
The South West Coast Path’s origins stretch far back in time, originally established by coastguards patrolling the South West peninsula in search of smugglers. Until 1913, coastguards would walk the path regularly, checking every inlet in their ongoing battle against maritime lawbreakers. Their need to observe every bay and hidden cove shaped the path’s distinctive character, which clings tightly to the coastline, offering spectacular views. Fishermen also frequented these trails, scanning the waters for shoals and assessing sea conditions before venturing out in their boats.
