Operating in the far west of Cornwall from 1971 to the 1980s, Skewjack was a surf camp that blazed a trail in more ways than one. From sex, drugs and rock’n’roll to changing surf culture and attitudes, Skewjack was a pioneering community that was ultimately forced to navigate the price of its success. Discover how Skewjack lives on today, and how we might learn from this pioneering community to create authentic and reciprocal relationships with each other and the Ocean.

Rachel Yates is a writer and activist, with a focus on surf storytelling and Ocean campaigning. She left a 21 year career in broadcast journalism to focus her skills and energy on creating community movements for change. After leading Penzance to be the first SAS Plastic Free Community in the UK, she joined the team at Surfers Against Sewage and manages their plastic pollution campaigns. When not working for the Ocean or writing about it, she is in it; swimming, surfing and giving thanks.
