Home Education Days run from 10am – 2pm and include a facilitated workshop (morning or afternoon) and self-directed time to explore the Museum.
Find out why the Vikings took to the sea, where they went and what they did when they got there in this workshop.
Morning session 10.30 – 12.00 or Afternoon session 12.30 – 14.00
Using our large floor map of the Viking world, we investigate where the Vikings came from, where they went, how they got there and what they did when they got there, followed by a hands-on trading challenge using replica Viking artefacts.
Taking place on our large Boat Pool, we demonstrate how Vikings used wind energy to move across the water using our model Viking boat on the water. Children can then experience wind-on-sail themselves by sailing our remote-controlled yachts.
Finally, have a go at striking your very own Viking coin (an exact replica of the 10th Century Eric Bloodaxe coin).
In addition to the facilitated workshop, there will be an opportunity to explore other parts of the museum. Tying into the Viking theme, I would strongly recommend taking the time to have a close look at our replica Viking Faering which is situated in our Boat Hall. You can also explore SURF!, our major temporary exhibition in The Hold, the tower with The Lookout at the very top with views across Falmouth harbour, The Tidal Zone at the bottom beneath the water. We also have our Cornwall Galleries that tell the stories of Cornwall’s relationship to the sea and our RNLI Rescue Zone where you’ll find a real RNLI Arancia in-shore lifeboat, RNLI jet-ski, RNLI quadbike and life raft as well as key safety messages and interactive displays.
