Home Education Days run from 10am – 2pm and include a facilitated workshop (morning or afternoon) and self-directed time to explore the Museum.
In this evocative workshop, discover what life was like for the pilchard fishermen and women in 19th Century Cornwall.
Morning session 10.30 – 12.00 or Afternoon session 12.30 – 14.00
Step back in time to meet Lizbeth, a ‘bulker’ from the heyday of Cornwall’s pilchard fishing heritage. Hevva! Hevva! is a dramatic performance that brings to life the skills, language and traditions of Cornish pilchard fishermen and women in the 1870s. Through a spell-binding and interactive mix of film, storytelling and object investigation, children will discover how the pilchard fishing industry shaped the coastal communities in Cornwall.
In this hands-on activity, the children learn about traditional rope making and make their own rope as well as learning about wind-on-sail by using our remote-controlled yachts on our big boat pool.
In addition to the facilitated workshop, there will be an opportunity to explore other parts of the museum including our major exhibition, SURF!, as well as The Lookout at the very top of our tower, The Tidal Zone at the bottom of the tower, under the sea, the RNLI Rescue Zone where you’ll find a real RNLI Arancia in-shore lifeboat, RNLI jet-ski and RNLI quadbike as well as key safety messages and interactive displays, and our Cornwall Galleries where you can learn about Cornwall’s relationship to the sea.
