These are some of the more unexpected and lesser known wartime tales of real events that took place in and around Falmouth Bay between the 16th century and the 1940s.

Elizabeth Dale was born and raised on a farm close to Falmouth and has been researching and writing about local history for much of her life. In 2016 she created her blog – The Cornish Bird – which aims to uncover Cornwall’s hidden stories and she also writes regularly for local and national publications, has a weekly slot on Radio Cornwall talking about Cornish history and recently published her first book, ‘Buried at the Crossroads’.
In Times of War: Peculiar Tales of Conflict & Crisis from Falmouth’s Past with Elizabeth Dale is part of National Maritime Museum Cornwall’s 2026 Autumn Lecture Series ‘Cornwall At War’.
