The great Cornishman, Sir Arthur Quiller Couch, is known for editing the Oxford Book of English Verse, and for The Art of Writing. The latter being his inaugural lectures when appointed as Professor of English at Cambridge. He wrote many short stories and books, but his fictional work was often based on good historical information and a sharp eye for human frailty. This article examines how his deep love of the sea and his love of Fowey influenced his writing.
