Voyage of the Mystery – Home Education

Home Education Days run from 10am – 2pm and include a facilitated workshop (morning or afternoon) and self-directed time to explore the Museum.

Wednesday 23 September, 10am – 2pm

In this hands-on workshop, step back in time and discover the incredible true story of seven Cornish fishermen who, in 1854, sailed half-way across the world in their fishing boat, Mystery.

Voyage of the Mystery – 45 mins

Join Job Kelynack on an adventure of a lifetime. Discover the true story of seven Cornish fishermen who sailed a tiny fishing boat on an incredible voyage from Newlyn to the goldfields of Australia. Through a spell-binding and interactive mix of film, storytelling and object investigation, children will be drawn into the story of what happened to the men as they set off in their tiny fishing boat, Mystery.

‘Mystery’ Tray Boat Making – 45 mins

In this hands-on activity, the children have a close look at our Mystery model and learn the different parts of the boat before constructing their very own Mystery from recyclable materials to race across our boat pool.

Self-Directed Explore – 90 mins

In addition to the facilitated workshop, there will be an opportunity to explore other parts of the museum including our major exhibition, SURF!, as well as The Lookout at the very top of our tower, The Tidal Zone at the bottom of the tower, under the sea, the RNLI Rescue Zone where you’ll find a real RNLI Arancia in-shore lifeboat, RNLI jet-ski and RNLI quadbike as well as key safety messages and interactive displays, and our Cornwall Galleries where you can learn about Cornwall’s relationship to the sea.

Please note, due to capacity we have to restrict the number of accompanying adults to 1 x adult per family; additional adults will need to purchase admission at the standard rate and won’t be able to join the workshop itself. Please note, this charge covers access to the Museum and the workshop for the day.
