Andy Hughes’s artistic practice began over 30 years ago, profoundly influenced by learning to surf in the late 1980s and noticing the marine plastic and other waste debris washed ashore. Andy was the first artist in residence at Tate Gallery St Ives in 1993 and has been a long-term member and collaborator with Surfers Against Sewage since 1991. Most recently, he returned from living and working as an artist in residence on the tiny island of Gapado in South Korea, home to the famous Haenyeo fishers. Photographic artworks from this residency were included in the 2025 UN Ocean Manifesto book.
