Maritime Museum achieves Sandford Award

The Museum is proud that it has achieved a prestigious Sandford Award for the outstanding quality of its education work.  The award is highly regarded as an independently judged ‘Quality Assured Assessment’ of heritage education within an historic and cultural environment.

Following a rigorous external assessment, judges from the Heritage Education Trust selected the Maritime Museum for the award based on its education policies, procedures, resources and new workshops.

Criteria of assessment incuded:  the awareness of and adherence to the national curricula; a contribution to raising awareness of local and national heritage; evidence of good liaison with educational establishments; how well the educational potential of the site is being developed; the provision of relevant educational resources; and the provision of additional facilities that enhance the quality of the students’ visit.

In summing up the Museum’s achievements, the judges citation stated that:

“The National Maritime Museum Cornwall is a new museum in a stunning location on Falmouth’s harbourside. The galleries have been designed for learning and excitement pervades the whole museum. The education service is led by an experienced and highly committed manager, well supported by a team of volunteers, and demonstrates excellent education practice in a very well equipped setting. The programmes and workshops have been developed in close consultation with Cornwall LEA’s Advanced Skills Teachers and makes very good use of all aspects of evaluation. The service is already excellent and is set to improve further over the coming years”.
